The hardest thing about returning from a vacation is focusing on everyday life when your thoughts are on a different continent. It took almost two weeks to snap back into reality. Of course, sorting hundreds of photos I had taken during the trip didn’t help a bit with the re-entry.

After a 3 week hiatus of traveling in Asia, I’m back to reawaken this blog from its slumber. The trip was magnificent for visiting family and favorite restaurants in Hong Kong—and discovering new adventures and cultures with M in Yunnan province, China.

The distinct taste and scent of oranges has long claimed a place on my favorites list. As a boy, I couldn’t get enough of Pepperidge Farm’s Orange Milanos. I’d arrive home from school ravenous for a comfort-food fix before sitting down to a round of homework like a good Chinese child. Those orange and chocolate cookies got me through until dinner (well, supplemented by a trip or two into the kitchen to grab something else).

November and half of December have been an unfashionably warm on the East coast, so it’s taken some effort to summon the holiday spirit. Yes, we had a few cold days here and there, but that’s just not enough for this New Yorker. The guys selling Christmas trees on the street corners are normally bundled up and shivering next to their electric heaters. This year, they’ve worn little more than t-shirts on many days.

nyc 2nd annual cookie swap

It was time to start packing up the baked goods for the NYC 2nd Annual Cookie Swap, which this year will benefit Cookies for Kid’s Cancer. After a quick breakfast, I started packing the cookies, but the task wasn’t that easy–I had made several types and couldn’t bring all. After taste testing them for the last time (yes, I ate cookies after breakfast) I decided to bring Coco-Mac Cookies with Pineapple Caramel and Bourbon Cherry Brownie Cookies. (I’ll post the recipes soon). The Ginger Snowdrops that I’ve originally planned for this occasion were perfectly fine, but I wanted to bring more surprises.

As far as holiday birthdays are concern, Thanksgiving probably ranks in the middle of that list. Most people are either busy getting ready for Thanksgiving or simply take the week off for vacation. So if you are planning a big birthday party, you need to tell people far in advance. Well, good thing M is a low key kinda guy who doesn’t like big B-day parties.

Oh dear, it’s almost Thanksgiving–whatever happened to autumn? Ever since our Labor Day vacation in Ogunquit, Maine, the weeks just flew by in a blur. M has been extra busy with his work and travels. I filled the days with rehearsing for a dance competition, planning for the Pie Party and now it’s almost time for cooking for Thanksgiving and baking for the Cookie Swap in a few weeks. Oh, yes, there was some work in there, too.

Now that Halloween is behind us, we can enjoy pumpkins for their inner beauty and real purpose—consuming not carving. Not everyone likes pumpkin, however. Ask a room full of people, “Who likes pumpkin pie?” and there will be a few enthusiasts longing for a taste and the majority responding as if you’ve just offered them a turnip cookie.

heart warming party — baked apples w cider-rum sauce

A few weeks ago when I posted the Toffee Apple Cookie recipe, I mentioned my hesitation with purchasing apples at the Farmer’s Market in New York City. That produce might have been from last year’s remaining crop in storage.

Last week, fresh apples were in abundant supply at the Montgomery Orchard farm stand in Dutchess County. This one is our favorite upstate stand because Montgomery has 60 varieties of apples, mostly heirloom, and various other types of fruit and vegetables. They pick produce every day, and their heirloom apples are flavorful breeds with intriguing names such as Ida Red, Cameo Fuji and Blacktwigs.
